No matter when or where you choose to study, it is always a good idea to begin your study by asking God for help. Start by turning to Him and asking Him to give you wisdom and understanding as you read. Ask for specific help for your life. When you are finished, conclude your prayer “in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.” When we pray before we study, we show God that we are humble and desire His help and guidance.2
It is not necessary to start reading from the beginning
The Bible is a very long book, but you can start wherever you want. For example, if you want to learn about Jesus, you can start in the New Testament, with Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. You can also choose a specific character or topic to study.3
Choose a topic that interests you
Is there a particular topic that interests you? Grace, repentance, forgiveness, or strength during trials? Find specific verses on your chosen topic and study them. You can also begin exploring the resources available on the Church. There you will find common themes and related scripture verses. Use the resources you find to expand your study.4
Meet a character
Pick a character or group of people in the Bible and read every verse you can find about them. Try to understand the context of each verse. Ask questions that will help you get to know them better, such as: How did this person meet Jesus? What relationship do they have? What can I have in common with this person? What can I learn from their life?5
Take note of what you learn
Don’t forget the things you’ve learned from the Bible or the things the Holy Spirit teaches you through study. Use a journal or notebook to keep track of impressions and thoughts that come to you as you read. The more respect we show for the things we learn, the more the Lord will be willing to show us.6
Listen to the Bible online
Sometimes we need to see (or hear) the Bible from a different perspective. You might want to listen to the Bible while driving, exercising, or doing chores around the house. you’ll find recorded Bible readings. You can read or listen and access helpful study guides.
You could also download the Gospel Library app for mobile phones which includes the Bible and much more.
Read or share with others
Family members and friends can contribute to your study. Their unique perspectives allow them to identify unique meanings and applications. When you have questions, gain insight from your friends and family by sharing meaningful verses with them. You can also share what you learn on social media.
Investigate what you don’t understand
Chances are, as you study the Bible, you’ll come across terms that are confusing or that you simply don’t understand. Don’t hesitate to look up the meaning of a particular word or phrase, or even an entire parable. On the Internet, you’ll find millions of people who study the Bible just like you, and also many experts who can help you in your study.9
Pause and listen
It is important to read carefully and study God’s Word, but it is equally important to stop, quiet our minds, and listen. When we take time to meditate after studying the Bible, God can enlighten our minds through the Holy Spirit.10
Don’t be discouraged
Bible learning is a lifelong process. God is pleased with any effort we make to learn His Word, no matter how much we understand as we read. By being consistent in our study efforts, we can receive greater understanding.
